Plane trees are a quintessential part of the French landscape and were widely used in the early and mid-19th century – first planted along roadsides on the orders of Napoleon to provide shade for troops moving through the country.

They create a wonderful effect of light and shade, particularly when sunny. And driving between them is a joy.
